ABSTRACT Among the main problems that compromise the development of forest species are water and salt stresses, especially in the early stages of development, when seedlings are more sensitive. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the morphophysiological and biochemical changes in Enterolobium contortisiliquum seedlings subjected to abiotic stresses. The experimental design was randomized complete blocks (RCB), composed of five treatments, with four replicates, and the experimental plot consisted of twenty plants. From the 31st day after sowing, when the seedlings reached approximately 15 cm in height, they began to receive the treatments, which consisted of different levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0.3; 2; 4; 6; 8 dS m-1) for salt stress and periods of water restriction (0; 4; 8; 12 and 16 days without irrigation) for water stress. The traits evaluated were: plant height, root length, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, total dry matter, Dickson quality index, height/shoot dry matter ratio, total soluble sugars, starch, total amino acids and proline. An increase in the electrical conductivity of irrigation water and days without irrigation compromised the development of E. contortisiliquum seedlings, which was intensified from 2 dS m-1 and four days without irrigation for salt and water stresses, respectively. The mechanism of survival of E. contortisiliquum to abiotic stresses involves reduction in the growth and quality of seedlings, with activation of biochemical defense mechanisms of the species.

ABSTRACT. The scarcity of surface water has led to the use of underground sources as an alternative for crop irrigation by farmers in semi-arid regions. However, these water sources generally have high salinity, which prevents agricultural production. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of pre-germination treatments with plant growth regulators and bioactivators on melon seeds to attenuate salt stress caused by irrigation water during germination and seedling development. Two trials were carried out separately with the hybrids, Goldex and Grand Prix. The design was completely randomized in a 4 × 3 factorial scheme (four seed treatments and three dilutions of irrigation water). Seeds were treated with salicylic acid and gibberellic acid and the insecticide, thiamethoxam, in addition to the control. Local supply water, artesian well groundwater, and dilution of these waters at a 1:1 ratio were employed for irrigation. Fourteen days after sowing, morphological and physiological analyses were performed, and the material was collected for biochemical determination. The use of saline well water affected the initial development of melon seedlings of the Goldex and Grand Prix hybrids. Pre-germination treatment of Goldex hybrid seeds with gibberellic acid was inefficient at mitigating salt stress. However, the effects of irrigation water salinity on Grand Prix melon seeds pretreated with salicylic acid and thiamethoxam were attenuated.

Resumo: Mofumbo (Combretum leprosum Mart. (Combretaceae) é uma espécie neotropical de importância madeireira, farmacológica, apícola e ambiental. Dessa maneira, objetivou-se avaliar as respostas bioquímicas e fisiológicas em sementes de C. leprosum sob diferentes ambientes de armazenamento. O experimento foi conduzido em fatorial (2 x 7), sendo duas condições de armazenamento (ambientes natural e climatizado) e sete períodos de armazenamento (0; 60; 120; 180; 240; 300 e 360 dias), em quatro repetições por tratamento. No início do armazenamento e em intervalos de 60 dias, as sementes foram analisadas quanto ao teor de água, potencial fisiológico (germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimentos de raiz e parte aérea e massa seca de plântulas) e bioquímico (lipídios neutros, peroxidação de lipídios, açúcares totais e redutores, aminoácidos livres totais e amido). Os resultados indicaram que armazenar sementes de mofumbo por 360 dias reduziu a viabilidade, sendo mais acentuada a partir dos 180 dias, independente do ambiente de armazenamento. O armazenamento das sementes de mofumbo em ambiente natural manteve o vigor por 180 dias, proporcionado pela menor degradação de lipídios. Após esse período, a redução esteve associada ao ataque dos açúcares redutores aos aminoácidos. Com isso, conclui-se que as sementes de mofumbo devem ser armazenadas em ambiente natural por até 180 dias.

Abstract: “Mofumbo” (Combretum leprosum Mart. (Combretaceae) is a neotropical species of wood, pharmacological, beekeeping and environmental importance. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the biochemical and physiological responses in C. leprosum seeds under different storage environments. The experiment was carried out in a factorial (2 x 7), with two storage conditions (natural and climate-controlled environments) and seven storage periods (0; 60; 120; 180; 240; 300 and 360 days), in four replications per treatment. At the beginning of storage and at 60-day intervals, the seeds were analyzed for water content, physiological potential (germination, germination speed index, root and shoot lengths and seedling dry mass) and biochemical (neutral lipids, lipid peroxidation, total and reducing sugars, total free amino acids, and starch). The results indicated that storing “mofumbo” seeds for 360 days reduced viability, being more pronounced after 180 days, regardless of the storage environment. “Mofumbo” seeds were stored in a natural environment for 180 days, resulting in less lipid degradation. After this period, the reduction was associated with the attack of reducing sugars on amino acids. Thus, it is concluded that “mofumbo” seeds must be stored in a natural environment for up to 180 days.

RESUMO O potencial fisiológico das sementes é um dos principais fatores que devem ser considerados no momento da implantação de uma cultura. Com isso, objetivou-se avaliar a aplicação exógena de bioestimulante em abobrinha, cv. Caserta Italiana, em condições de estresse salino. Para isso, o experimento foi dividido em duas partes, a primeira foi realizada em laboratório, utilizando o delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 x 3 (dosagens de bioestimulante e tempos de embebição das sementes), com quatro repetições de 25 sementes. A segunda parte, foi realizado em casa de vegetação, em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, no esquema fatorial 2 x 6, com quatro repetições, sendo dois níveis de salinidade da água de irrigação (0,5 e 5,0 dS m-1) e seis formas de aplicação do bioestimulante via sementes e folhas. O tratamento de sementes de abobrinha, cv. Caserta Italiana, com bioestimulante (Stimulate®) na dosagem de 10 mL L-1, durante 8 horas, mostrou-se viável e resultou em mudas vigorosas quando irrigadas com água salina de 5,0 dS m-1.

ABSTRACT The physiological potential of seeds is one of the main factors that should be considered at the planting of a crop. This study aimed to evaluate the exogenous application of biostimulant in zucchini, cv. Caserta Italiana, under salt stress conditions. For this, the experiment was divided into two parts. The first one was carried out in the laboratory, using a completely randomized experimental design, in a 5 x 3 factorial scheme (biostimulant doses and seed soaking times), with four replicates of 25 seeds. The second one was carried out in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized experimental design, in a 2 x 6 factorial scheme with four replicates, corresponding to two levels of irrigation water salinity (0.5 and 5.0 dS m-1) and six forms of biostimulant application in seeds and leaves. Treatment of zucchini seeds, cv. Caserta Italiana, with biostimulant (Stimulate®) at the dose of 10 mL L-1, for 8 hours, proved to be viable and resulted in vigorous seedlings when irrigated with 5.0 dS m-1 saline water.

Abstract Catingueira (Poincianella pyramidalis Tul. L. P. Queiroz) is an endemic species of the Caatinga, with great economic potential. Research on the development of this species under conditions of water restriction, common in the Northeastern semi-arid region, is still scarce. This study evaluated the effects of water restriction on the morphological and biochemical characteristics of catingueira seedlings subjected to water restriction. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, with five treatments and four replicates. The treatments consisted of periods of water restriction (0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 days without irrigation). The characters evaluated were shoot height, leaf diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, total dry mass, ratio between shoot height and dry mass, Dickson quality index, chlorophylls a and b content, total soluble sugars and free proline. Periods of water restriction longer than six days caused damage to the seedlings development, with reduced growth and quality.

RESUMO Combretum leprosum Mart., conhecida popularmente como mofumbo, é utilizada para fins medicinais, melífera, forrageira e recuperação de áreas degradadas. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do estresse hídrico sobre a germinação e vigor de sementes de C. leprosum em diferentes temperaturas. Para isso, as sementes foram semeadas em substrato rolo de papel, umedecido com soluções de polietileno glicol (PEG 6000), nos potenciais osmóticos de 0,0; -0,1; -0,2; -0,3; -0,4; e -0,5 MPa; os testes de germinação foram conduzidos em germinadores sob as temperaturas de 25, 30, 35 e 20-30 °C, formando o fatorial 6 x 4. As avaliações foram as seguintes: germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento da raiz, comprimento da parte aérea, massa seca da raiz e massa seca da parte aérea. Houve interação significativa para todas as variáveis, verificando-se efeito negativo com a diminuição dos potenciais osmóticos. A C. leprosum apresentou alta sensibilidade a baixos potenciais osmóticos, com decréscimo mais acentuado a partir do potencial de -0,2 MPa para todas as temperaturas avaliadas. A germinação e o desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas de C. leprosum foram afetados de forma negativa pelos baixos potenciais osmóticos, com limite de tolerância máximo partir de -0,4 MPa. As temperaturas de 25 e 35 °C acentuam o efeito negativo do baixo potencial osmótico da água sobre a germinação e o desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas de C. leprosum.

ABSTRACT Combretum leprosum Mart., commonly known as ‘mofumbo’, is used for medicinal purposes, recovery of degraded areas and apiculture. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of water stress on the germination and vigor of C. leprosum seeds as function of different temperatures. To compose the treatments, the substrate used was paper roll moistened with polyethylene glycol solutions (PEG 6000), at the following levels of osmotic potential: 0.0; -0.1; -0.2; -0.2; -0.4; and -0.5 MPa, and placed in chamber at constant temperatures of 25, 30 and 35 and alternating temperature of 20-30 °C, forming a 6 x 4 factorial. The seeds were submitted to the following evaluations: germination percentage, germination speed index, root length, shoot length, root dry matter, shoot dry matter. There was a significant interaction for all variables, with a negative effect as the osmotic potentials decreased. Thus, C. leprosum showed high sensitivity to low osmotic potentials, showing a steeper decrease from the potential of -0.2 MPa for all evaluated temperatures. Initial germination and development of C. leprosum seedlings was negatively affected by low osmotic potentials, with a tolerance limit of -0.4 MPa. Temperatures of 25 and 35 °C accentuate the negative effect of the low osmotic potential of water on the germination and early development of C. leprosum seedlings.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar as características físicas e o comportamento fisiológico de sementes de A. oleracea durante a embebição e germinação, sob diferentes temperaturas e fotoperíodos, bem como determinar a duração para a execução do teste de germinação. Para isso, realizaram-se a biometria das sementes (comprimento, largura e espessura) de 100 sementes e peso de mil sementes. Assim como, as descrições das estruturas externas das sementes e plântulas e o monitoramento da curva de embebição. Em seguida, realizou-se o teste de germinação sob temperaturas de 20, 25, 30, 35, 20-30, e 25-35 ºC, submetidas aos fotoperíodos de luz e escuro constantes e alternado (12 h), arranjados em fatorial 6 x 3, com quatro repetições de 50 sementes. As sementes foram semeadas em caixas de plástico transparente, tendo como substrato o papel mata-borrão e colocadas para germinar em Biochemical Oxygen Demand (B.O.D), sendo avaliadas durante seis dias. As variáveis analisadas foram: germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento e massa seca de plântulas. O padrão de embebição, foi realizado com 4 repetições de 100 sementes, a 25 ºC, e avaliado até o surgimento de 50% de protrusão radicular. As sementes de A. oleracea apresentam características físicas uniformes e o modelo trifásico como padrão de absorção de água. As temperaturas de 25 e 30 °C e alternada de 20-30 °C, independente do fotoperíodo, proporcionaram maiores valores de germinação. As avaliações do teste de germinação de A. oleracea podem ser realizadas no quarto e sexto dia após a semeadura, como primeira e última contagem, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT The objective was to evaluate the physical characteristics and physiological behavior of A. oleracea seeds during imbibition and germination, under different temperatures and photoperiods, as well as to determine the duration of the germination test. For this, biometric parameters (length, width and thickness) were measured in 100 seeds and thousand-seed weight was determined. In addition, the external structures of seeds and seedlings were described and the imbibition curve was monitored. Subsequently, the germination test was conducted at temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35, 20-30 and 25-35 ºC, under constant and alternating light and dark photoperiods (12 h), arranged in 6 x 3 factorial scheme, with four replicates of 50 seeds. Seeds were sown in transparent plastic boxes with blotting paper as substrate, germinated in Biochemical Oxygen Demand (B.O.D) incubator, and evaluated for six days. The following variables were analyzed: germination, germination speed index, seedling length and seedling dry mass. The imbibition pattern test was conducted at 25 ºC with 4 replicates of 100 seeds, evaluated until 50% root protrusion occurred. A. oleracea seeds exhibit uniform physical characteristics and the three-phase model as a water absorption pattern. Constant temperatures of 25 and 30 °C and alternating temperatures of 20-30 °C, regardless of the photoperiod, led to higher germination values. For A. oleracea, the germination test evaluations can be performed on the fourth and sixth day after sowing, as first and last counts, respectively.

Resumo: Objetivou-se verificar a eficiência de índices físicos e bioquímicos na determinação da maturidade fisiológica de sementes de Tabebuia aurea, bem como avaliar o repouso pós-colheita dos frutos com diferentes estádios de maturação sobre a germinação e vigor. Para isto, classificou-se 200 frutos com a coloração do epicarpo em verde-escuro (estádio I), verde-claro (estádio II) e castanho-claro (estádio III). Inicialmente, nos frutos recém-colhidos, avaliou-se o comprimento, largura e peso e, para as sementes, o comprimento, largura e espessura, peso de mil sementes, teor de água, condutividade elétrica e composição química. Em seguida, utilizou-se o fatorial de três estádios de maturação e quatro períodos de repouso dos frutos (0, 5, 10 e 15 dias) e avaliou-se o teor de água, germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento de raiz, comprimento da parte aérea e massa seca de plântulas. Os índices físicos e bioquímicos podem ser utilizados como indicadores da maturação em sementes de T. aurea, com exceção do comprimento dos frutos, espessura das sementes, condutividade elétrica e teor de proteínas. O máximo de germinação e vigor de sementes de T. aurea foi obtido em frutos nos estádios I (verde-escuro) ou II (verde-claro), associados ao repouso pós-colheita por quinze dias.

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to verify the efficiency of physical and biochemical indices in determining the physiological maturity of Tabebuia aurea seeds, as well as to evaluate the post-harvest storage of fruits with different maturation stages on germination and vigor. For this, 200 fruits were classified as dark green (stage I), light green (stage II), and light brown (stage III) epicarp. Freshly harvested fruits were evaluated for length, width, and weight and their seeds for length, width, thickness, thousand-seed weight, water content, electrical conductivity, and chemical composition. Subsequently, a factorial consisting of three maturation stages and four storage periods of fruits (0, 5, 10 and 15 days) were used, and water content, germination, germination speed index, root length, shoot length, and seedling dry matter were evaluated. Physical and biochemical indices can be used as maturation indicators in T. aurea seeds, except fruit length, seed thickness, electrical conductivity, and protein content. The maximum germination and vigor of T. aurea seeds were obtained in fruits at stages I (dark green) or II (light green) associated with post-harvest storage of fifteen days.

RESUMO As empresas produtoras de sementes necessitam cada vez mais da obtenção de resultados rápidos e confiáveis quanto a qualidade das sementes. Nesse sentido, objetivou-se verificar a eficiência da medição do CO2 na classificação do vigor de sementes de maxixe (Cucumis anguria L.). Para isso, utilizaram-se três lotes para cada uma das cultivares “Do Norte” e “Nordestino”. Para a avaliação da qualidade fisiológica das sementes utilizou-se os testes de germinação, emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência, comprimento da parte aérea, matéria seca total, condutividade elétrica e atividade respiratória. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, sendo as médias comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. Efetuou-se a correlação simples de Pearson entre os testes de vigor tradicionais e a atividade respiratória. Os resultados dos testes de germinação e vigor permitiram classificar os lotes de sementes de maxixe em diferentes níveis de qualidade fisiológica. A medição do CO2 constitui-se em um método promissor para identificar diferenças de vigor entre lotes de sementes de maxixe.

ABSTRACT Seed companies increasingly need to obtain rapid and reliable results on seed quality. In this context, this study aimed at verifying the efficiency of CO2 measurement for classifying West Indian gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.) seed vigor, using three seed lots of cv. “Do Norte” and three of cv. “Nordestino”. In order to assess seed physiological quality, the following tests were performed: germination, seedling emergence, emergence speed index, shoot length, total dry matter, electrical conductivity and respiratory activity. The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates, and the means were compared by Tukey test at 5% probability level. Pearson’s simple correlation was performed between the traditional vigor tests and the respiratory activity. The results of the germination and vigor tests allowed the West Indian gherkin seed lots to be classified into different levels of physiological quality. CO2 measurement is a promising method to identify vigor differences among West Indian gherkin seed lots.

RESUMO Dentre os fatores que limitam a propagação de plantas, principalmente no semiárido brasileiro, destaca-se o problema de salinidade que afeta os solos em função da dissolução e intemperismo dos minerais e do solo. Objetivou-se avaliar a emergência e crescimento inicial de plantas de C. leprosum irrigadas com águas salinas de diferentes naturezas catiônicas. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação utilizando o substrato fibra de coco comercial umedecido com águas salinizadas com Na, Ca e K nas condutividades elétricas de: 0,0; 1,5; 2,5; 3,5; 4,5; 5,5 e 6,5 dS m-1. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado em esquema fatorial 3 x 7 (três sais x sete níveis de condutividade elétrica). Durante vinte dias avaliou-se a emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência de plântulas, comprimento da raiz, comprimento da parte aérea, massas secas da raiz e da parte aérea. Os resultados indicaram interação significativa entre os dois fatores analisados. A emergência e crescimento inicial de plantas de C. leprosum apresentam diminuição gradativa em função do aumento dos níveis de condutividade elétrica, com o comprimento de raiz sendo menos afetado pelas águas salinizadas com CaCl e KCl. As plântulas de C. leprosum apresentam sensibilidade aos três tipos de sais, sendo verificado alta sensibilidade a KCl e NaCl.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the tolerance of C. leprosum seedlings to salt stress during the emergence and early seedling development. The experiment was carried out between the months of August and September, in a greenhouse, and the substrate used was the commercial coconut fiber wetted with aqueous solutions of sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2) and potassium chloride (KCl) with the electrical conductivities of 0.0, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 dS m-1. We used a completely randomized design in a 3 x 7 factorial scheme (three salts x seven levels of electrical conductivity). We evaluated seedling emergence, emergence speed index, root length, shoot length, dry matter of roots and shoots. The results indicated significant interaction between both factors analyzed. The emergence and initial growth of C. leprosum plants decrease gradually due to the increase of the electrical conductivity levels, with root length being less affected by waters salinized with CaCl and KCl. C. leprosum seedlings show sensitivity to the three types of salts and are highly sensitive to KCl and NaCl.

RESUMO Atualmente, busca-se utilizar substratos constituídos, principalmente, de resíduos orgânicos, a fim de diminuir os custos com adubação química. Nesse sentido, o experimento teve como objetivo avaliar diferentes tipos de substratos para a emergência e desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas de cássia-rosa (Cassia grandis L. f.). O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação do Departamento de Ciências Vegetais da Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido (UFERSA), em Mossoró - RN, no período de abril a maio de 2012. Os substratos utilizados foram: terra vegetal + palha de arroz (nas proporções de 1:1, 1:3 e 3:1), terra vegetal + pó de madeira (nas proporções de 1:1, 1:3 e 3:1), terra vegetal + fibra de coco (nas proporções de 1:1, 1:3 e 3:1), terra vegetal + casca de castanha-de-caju (nas proporções de 1:1, 1:3 e 3:1) e terra vegetal (testemunha). O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com 13 tratamentos (combinações dos substratos), em quatro repetições de 25 sementes e as médias submetidas ao teste de Skot-knott (pr<0,05). Foram avaliadas as variáveis porcentagem e velocidade de emergência, comprimento da parte aérea, comprimento de raiz e massa seca da parte aérea, massa seca da raiz e massa seca total. De acordo com os resultados, os substratos terra vegetal + pó de madeira (1:1) e terra vegetal + fibra de coco (1:3) foram os mais apropriados, proporcionando melhores resultados em emergência, massa seca da parte aérea, comprimento da parte aérea, massa seca da raiz e comprimento da raiz. Por outro lado, verificou-se que o substrato composto com terra vegetal e casca de castanha-de-caju (1:3) mostrou-se inadequado para a emergência de plântulas de cássia-rosa.

ABSTRACT Currently, it is aimed to use substrates composed primarily of organic waste in order to reduce costs with chemical fertilizer. In that sense, the experiment was to evaluate different types of substrates for the emergence and early development of seedlings of Cassia grandis L. f. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at the Departament of Vegetable Sciences of Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. The substrates used were: sand + carbonized rice husk (in ratios of 1:1, 1:3 and 3:1), plant sand + wood dust (in ratios of 1:1, 1:3 and 3:1), plant sand + coconut fiber (in ratios of 1:1, 1:3 and 3:1), plant sand + chestnut bark (in ratios of 1:1, 1:3 and 3:1) and plant sand (control). The experimental design was a completely randomized design with 13 treatments (combinations of substrates), with four replications of 25 seeds and the means to test for Skot-knot (pr <0.05). We evaluated the following variables: plant emergence, emergence speed, plant height, root length and weight of the aerial part of the plant, root dry mass and total dry mass. According to the results, the substrate plant sand + sawdust (1:1) and plant sand + coconut fiber (1:3) showed higher values, providing better results in emergence, weight of the aerial part of the plant, length of the aerial part of the plant, root dry mass and root length. It was found that the substrate compounds sand plant and chestnut bark (1:3) is harmful to the emergence of seedling of Cassia grandis.

A maturação da semente é controlada geneticamente, envolvendo uma sequência ordenada de alterações verificadas a partir da fecundação até que se tornem independentes da planta-mãe. Essas alterações compreendem um conjunto de etapas que preparam para o sucesso da futura germinação, caracterizada pela síntese e acúmulo de reservas. Dessa forma, este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o desenvolvimento e qualidade fisiológica de sementes de feijão-caupi durante o processo de maturação. Para isso, vagens da cultivar BRS-Guariba de feijão-caupi foram colhidas a partir do décimo dia após a antese (DAA) até o vigésimo sexto DAA, com intervalos de quatro dias. Após cada coleta, as sementes foram manualmente extraídas das vagens e submetidas às seguintes determinações: grau de umidade, primeira contagem de germinação, porcentagem final de germinação, comprimento de parte aérea e raízes, diâmetro do hipocótilo e massa seca das plântulas. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos (DAA) e quatro repetições cada. As sementes de feijão-caupi apresentam maturação fisiológica bastante rápida e aquelas colhidas entre 14 e 18 DAA têm melhor vigor e maior porcentagem de germinação; assim, colheita deve ser realizada durante esse período, pois não causa danos às sementes.

The seed maturation process is genetically controlled and involves an arranged sequence of morphological and physiological changes extending from fertilization to its total independence from the mother-plant. These changes also include a set of preparatory phases for the germination process, which are characterized for the synthesis and accumulation of nutrient reserves. Thereby, this study was developed aiming at assessing development and physiological quality of cowpea seeds during maturation process. To this, the cowpea pods of cultivar BRS-Guariba were harvested from the tenth day after anthesis (DAA) until the twenty sixth DAA, with four days intervals. Immediately after each harvest, seeds were manually extracted from the pods and then subjected to the following determinations: moisture content, first count of germination, final germination percentage, length of shoots and roots, hypocotyl diameter, and seedling dry mass. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design, with five treatments (DAA), and four replications to each treatment. Results have shown that cowpea seeds have fairly fast physiological maturation, and that seeds harvested between 14 and 18 DAA have better vigor as well as higher germination rates; thus the harvest performed during this period does not cause damages to seeds.

O feijão-caupi desempenha importante papel na produção agrícola brasileira, especialmente nas Regiões Norte e Nordeste, onde é amplamente cultivado por pequenos produtores. Neste sentido, este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de feijão-caupi produzidas em sistema plantio direto e convencional, sob diferentes períodos sem irrigação. Utilizou-se delineamento em blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas por sistemas de plantio (direto e convencional) e as subparcelas por períodos sem irrigação (2, 6, 10, 14, 18 e 22 dias). Nas parcelas, as sementes foram colhidas e submetidas às seguintes avaliações: massa de sementes por planta, massa de mil sementes, massa hectolítrica, comprimento e largura da semente, grau de umidade, germinação, envelhecimento acelerado, emergência de plântulas em campo e índice de velocidade de emergência. Sementes de feijão-caupi provenientes de plantas submetidas ao estresse hídrico resultaram em menor qualidade fisiológica, contudo, fisicamente maiores e mais pesadas. O sistema plantio direto proporcionou sementes com melhor qualidade fisiológica. Plantas de feijão-caupi submetidas ao estresse hídrico após o florescimento produziram menor quantidade de sementes.

The cowpea plays an important role in the Brazilian agricultural production, especially in the North and Northeast Regions, where it is widely cultivated by smallholders. Thus, this study aimed at evaluating the physiological quality of cowpea seeds produced under no-tillage and conventional tillage and different periods without irrigation. A randomized blocks design, in a split-plot scheme, with four replications, was used. The plots consisted of cropping systems (no-tillage and conventional tillage), while the subplots consisted of periods without irrigation (2, 6, 10, 14, 18 and 22 days). In the plots, seeds were collected and subjected to the following evaluations: seeds weight per plant, one thousand seeds weight, test weight, seed length and width, moisture content, germination, accelerated aging, field seedling emergence and emergence speed index. Cowpea seeds from plants subjected to hydric stress resulted in lower physiological quality, but were physically bigger and heavier. The no-tillage system provided seeds with better physiological quality. Cowpea plants subjected to hydric stress after flowering produced fewer seeds.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de diferentes concentrações salinas na água de irrigação na emergência e desenvolvimento inicial de plântulas de flamboyant (Delonix regia (Bojer ex Hook.) Raf.). O experimento foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação do Departamento de Ciências Vegetais da Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido - UFERSA, Mossoró-RN. O delineamento estatístico utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições, com 25 sementes cada. Os tratamentos consistiram das concentrações salinas (0,5; 1,5; 3,0; 4,5 e 6,0 dS m-1), que foram obtidas através da adição de NaCl em água de forma que as soluções fossem calibradas para as condutividades elétricas pré-estabelecidas. As variáveis avaliadas foram: porcentagem de emergência de plântulas, índice de velocidade de emergência, área foliar, altura de plântula, número de folíolos, comprimento de raiz e massa seca da parte aérea. A salinidade interfere negativamente em todas as variáveis avaliadas de forma proporcional ao seu aumento na água de irrigação das plântulas de flamboyant, sendo o maior desenvolvimento das plântulas obtido na dose 0,5 dS m-1.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different salt concentrations in irrigation water on the emergence and initial development of flamboyant (Delonix regia (Bojer ex Hook.) Raf.) seedlings. The experiment was conducted in the greenhouse of the Department of Plant Sciences, Universidade Federal Rural do Semiárido - UFERSA, Mossoró-RN. The statistical design was completely randomized with five treatments and four replicates, each with 25 seeds. The treatments consisted of salt concentrations (0.5, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0 dS m-1), obtained by adding NaCl to water so that the solutions were calibrated to the pre-established electrical conductivity values. The variables measured were: percentage of seedling emergence, rate of emergence, leaf area, seedling height, number of leaves, root length and shoot dry weight. Salinity negatively affects all variables directly proportional to its increase in the irrigation water, with the greatest seedling development at a dose of 0.5 dS m-1.
